The Step One Survey – Integrity Assessment

Solving a vital business problem.

The Step One Survey is a brief pre-hire assessment that measures an individual’s basic work-related values. It is used primarily as a screening tool early in the candidate selection process. This assessment provides valid insight into an applicant’s work ethic, reliability, integrity, propensity for substance abuse, and attitudes toward theft—including property, data and time.

An Overview

The Step One Survey is a brief pre-hire assessment that measures an individual’s basic work-related values. Employee theft and fraud are growing concerns, costing employers in excess of $400 billion annually.

A lack of employee integrity can be the root cause of many problems a company faces. Employee theft contributes to a third of business failures. Put another way, thousands of employers have their businesses stolen by the people they thought were working for them.

Gain valuable insight into job applicants and select candidates that best match specific job situations. The Step One Survey helps by giving employers an effective alternative for selecting job applicants who are honest, reliable, drug-free, and who express an appropriate work ethic.

It is a scientifically designed assessment tool that helps answer these questions:

• “Can this applicant be trusted?”
• “Is this applicant drug-free?”
• “Is this applicant dependable?”
• “Will this applicant be a long-term, hard-working employee?”

In many organisations, it is the first screen that all applicants must pass before proceeding in the hiring process.

What The Assessment Measures

It measures attitudes regarding:

Personal integrity.
Substance abuse.
Reliability.
Work ethic.

Reports Available

Section One of the report summarises admissions of acts with which the employer might be concerned. These might include theft, drug use, absenteeism, tardiness, etc. This section also has a Verbal Interviewing Guide consisting of suggested interview questions. The interview questions should be asked in order to clarify your understanding of the applicant. When an applicant openly admits to a particular behaviour, discussing that behaviour may prove valuable to the hiring process.

Section Two of the Step One Survey II® report describes the applicant’s significant attitudes and compares them to the attitudes of people with histories of success as employees andwith the attitudes of people who have been convicted of fraud, theft, and drug abuse. In the process of constructing the SOS, the sample group made up of trusted, long-term employeestended to post high scores in Section Two.

By using the Step One Survey to evaluate job candidates, you will gain information essential to making effective hiring decisions.
