The skill of SELF – AWARENESS is about being aware of the way you feel and the impact your feelings can have on decisions, behaviour and performance

The core emotional intelligence competencies (in yellow) of the model below help us consistently demonstrate the productive being states on the right side ( in white) of the model, as opposed to the unproductive being states on left side (grey) of the model that we can all be at times.

Self-Awareness is about being aware of the way you feel and the impact your feelings can have on decisions, behaviour and performance. People who are emotionally self-aware are conscious of the role their feelings can play in these areas and are better equipped to manage this influence effectively. When we are emotionally self-aware, we are present with the role feelings are playing in our decisions, behaviour and performance. When we are not, we are often disconnected from this influence.

WHY IS SELF – AWARENESS SO IMPORTANT?

A person’s behaviour can positively or negatively impact the performance and engagement of colleagues; • People need to know their strengths and limitations in order to continuously improve and maintain success; and • Our interpretation of events at work is both made, and limited by, our intelligence, personality, values and beliefs. In order to objectively evaluate events, people must know how they interpret the world and how this helps and limits them.
